The game pits four Survivors of an apocalyptic pandemic against hordes of aggressive zombies. There are two game modes: a four-player, co-op Campaign mode, and an eight-player Versus mode. In both modes, an AI, dubbed "The Director", controls level pacing and item spawns, in an attempt to create a dynamic experience and increase replay value.
The game went gold on November 13, 2008, and was released on November 18, 2008 in the United States; and on November 21, 2008, in Europe to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the release of Half-Life. A five-minute trailer was released on Halloween. A playable demo was made available on November 6 for pre-purchasers and on November 11 for the general public, and was closed on November 18, 2008. The demo contained the majority of the first two chapters in the "No Mercy" campaign, and was playable in both single and multi-player co-op.
Left 4 Dead was well received with an aggregate score of 88% on Game Rankings and 89% on Metacritic upon its release, with praise given for its replay value, focus on cooperative play, and movie-like experience. As they have done with Team Fortress 2, Valve intends to support the game with downloadable content.

The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran from an unspecified country in Eastern Europe, who comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, but quickly becomes entangled in a seedy underworld of gangs, crime, and corruption. Like other games in the series, GTA IV is composed of elements from driving games and third-person shooters, and features "open-world" gameplay that gives players more control over their playing experience. GTA IV is the first console game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode, which contains fifteen game types.
A major commercial and critical success, Grand Theft Auto IV broke industry records with sales of around 3.6 million units on its first day of release and grossing more than $500 million in revenue in the first week, from an estimated 6 million units sold worldwide. As of 16 August 2008, the game has sold over 10 million copies. Disney layoffs hit Turok, Bolt studios
A representative with the publisher dismissed online reports that more than 70 developers had been let go from the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Propaganda, saying the actual number was less than 30. As for those reports' other contention--that a planned sequel to the studio's Turok game was canceled in the process--the representative said only that Propaganda still has two teams working on unannounced projects and that Disney Interactive Studios holds the rights to the Turok character, which it licensed from Classic Media. Since Propaganda Games' formation in 2005, the studio has released only one game, last year's PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC revamp of the Turok franchise.
As for Avalanche and Fall Line, Disney is consolidating the two Salt Lake City, Utah, development houses "for efficiencies," a process that resulted in "less than 20" employees being laid off today. Since the founding of Fall Line in 2006, the studio has focused on games for Nintendo systems, and the representative said that the consolidation will bring the Wii "into the forefront of our development plan at Avalanche."
Previous Fall Line titles include the DS efforts Hannah Montana: Music Jam and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Even before the consolidation, Disney had referred to Fall Line as a "sister studio" to Avalanche Software.
Not to be confused with Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios, Disney's Avalanche Software frequently works with the company's family-friendly feature film properties, like Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little, and, most recently, Bolt. Prior to Avalanche's acquisition by Disney in 2005, the developer had worked on a wider variety of games, including Midway projects like NBA Showtime, Rampage 2: Universal Tour, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

Nintendo earnings soar, Wii nears 45 million
Right now, somewhere in Kyoto, Japan, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is smiling. Four years after skeptics questioned the Wii's viability, the console is soaring above even the wildest expectations.
This morning, the company that spent the last hardware generation bringing up the rear with the GameCube reported that its current console had sold 44.96 million units worldwide as of December 31--a 10 million unit increase from just two months prior. Of those 10 million, more than 4 million were sold in the US, with the NPD Group reporting 2.04 million in November and 2.15 million in December.
Naturally, record sales mean record profits for Nintendo. In the nine months preceding December 31, the company racked up net sales of ¥1.536 trillion ($17.12 billion), a 17 percent year-on-year increase. Operating profits for the period were ¥501 billion ($5.58 billion)--a 27 percent increase--with net profits of ¥212.5 billion ($2.36 billion).
Unfortunately, the rising strength of the yen means that Nintendo's success abroad doesn't translate as well at home. As a result, Nintendo is revising its annual earnings estimates down 9 percent to a still-record ¥1.82 trillion ($20.2 billion). Forecasts for operating profit were cut 36 percent to 530 billion ($5.90 billion), with net profit trimmed back 33 percent to 230 billion ($2.56 billion).

Windows XP LifeSpan Extended
Although Microsoft has iterated that this is not an extension programme to prolong the lifespan of Windows XP, they do allow distributors to place their final orders for this product until end of January 2009. Microsoft XP has been in the market for over 90 months since its initial public release in 2001.
It follows that Microsoft Vista, the next generation of Windows operating system, is likely to further market even strongly to attract end-user consumers as well as corporate users. However, it may seem that Windows 7, may be the favourite as Vista looks to fail.

KDE 4.2 Released
The KDE community announced a few minutes ago, in a press release, the immediate availability of the final version of KDE (K Desktop Environment) 4.2 a.k.a. "The Answer." IE8 RC1 for Windows 7 Builds 70XX Is Live
“The IE8 Release Candidate is for Windows Vista, XP, and Server only; Windows 7 users will get an updated IE8 with the next update of Windows 7,” Dean Hachamovitch, IE general manager, revealed. As you can see, Hachamovitch carefully avoided the words Windows 7 Release Candidate, or any mention of the Build number for the next update of Win 7. And he's not the only one.
“If you are running Windows 7 Beta, you will not be able to install IE8 RC1. You will get an error message saying that your operating system is not supported since IE8 already ships in Win7. The IE8 RC1 available from Microsoft Download Center is a standalone upgrade for downlevel version of the OS only: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008 and Window Server 2003,” Jane Maliouta, IE program manager, said.
On January 21, 2009, 11 days after Microsoft made available the public downloads of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000, Frank Olivier, IE UX and Compatibility PM, indicated that the “version of IE8 in Windows 7 Beta is somewhat older than the Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate (IE8 RC1).” Olivier also pointed out that Microsoft had already fixed issues in the Beta 2 release of IE7's successor in Internet Explorer 8 RC1, but also in the “most recent internal Win7 build.”
On January 21, 2009, the most recent internal build of Windows 7 was from the Release Candidate branch of the operating system. Windows 7 Build 7025 is part of the RC build, and, as you can see from the screenshot included within this article, it comes with Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1. Windows 7 users will only be able to test IE8 RC1 running on the operating system via future RC Build 70XX releases.

There's scheduler, although the app contains a manual defragger so you can force a systems check. Other options will appeal to advanced users. Boot Time Defragging defrags your hard drive at start up, but also slows down the boot process. I-FAAST defragging sequences files in conjunction with the automatic defragger. Frag Shield keeps critical system files from fragmenting. Diskeeper keeps your swap file at the front of the disk, which makes transferring information considerably faster.
Obtaining Diskeeper isn't as simple as using it, and you must register for the trial at the publisher's Web site before downloading. The boot-time defragger adds the long defrag process to your start-up, so it may not be worthwhile to all users.

Need For Speed Undercover promised to bring back all of the things that made Electronic Arts' famous racing franchise so popular, namely the free roaming environment and the police. It was marketed by EA as the title that would erase the ugly memory of ProStreet from the minds of racers and offer them a great gameplay experience.
While at first glance you might label this game as just a next generation port of the previous Most Wanted title in the NFS series, EA has insisted that this one was very different from the 2005 title. The company went forward to show that it had a deep and intricate story in which you are a federal agent who must take down a car smuggling operation by going undercover and pretending to be a normal street racer. While this story isn't like the one from Most Wanted, where you were a regular street racer engaged in pursuits with the police, a lot of other elements are similar to the previous game. So, is NFS Undercover really worth your hard earned money or should you just wait another year for the next title in the series? Well, here's our complete review.

IE8 RC1 for Vista SP1 and XP SP3 About to Be Released
At the end of August 2008, Microsoft made available for download the Beta 2 release of IE8, the evolution from Beta 1, which was initially launched in March of the past year. By the end of 2008, a Partner Build of Internet Explorer 8 was offered to a select pool of testers, which already carried the label Release Candidate 1. Now, the software giant is simply gearing up to serve the real thing to the general public, namely the fully-fledged Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1 (IE8 RC1), leaving the Beta stage behind, and signaling the proximity of the RTW (release to web) phase.
“Over the past months, our compatibility team has been hard at work, finding and fixing bugs that cause site rendering issues. Due to the different release schedules for Windows 7 Beta and IE8 RC1, some of these bug fixes didn't make it into Windows 7 Beta (aka Build 7000). So, if you want to use the latest version of IE8 – you’ll want to install IE8 RC1 for Windows Vista or Windows XP,” Olivier explained.
In this context, the IE8 Beta build that is included into Windows 7 Beta is an interim version of the browser, more evolved than Beta 2, but inferior to Release Candidate 1. While IE8 RC1 will be made available for all supported versions of Windows with the exception of Windows 7, the Beta variant in Win7 is bound to evolve at the same pace as the rest of the operating system it comes bundled with.
“Just like we did for IE8 Beta 2, we would love to get your feedback on IE8 RC1 rendering. Soon after we release IE8 RC1, we will [detail] again about using the Report a Webpage Problem Add-On to report site rendering issues. The data that you have uploaded with this tool in the past has been very useful in our efforts to find and fix rendering issues – thank you very much for helping us out,” Olivier concluded.

Adobe eLearning Suite for Vista SP1 and XP SP3
Adobe has announced that its Adobe eLearning Suite is now available for Windows Vista RTM and Service Pack 1, and for Windows XP SP3 and earlier, as of January 20, 2009. The solution, tailored to the two supported Windows clients, brings to the table a wide range of products, including Adobe Captivate, Adobe Flash CS4, Adobe Dreamweaver CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe Presenter 7, Adobe Soundbooth CS4, Adobe Bridge CS4, Adobe Device Central CS4, as well as eLearning extensions for Adobe Flash CS4 and Adobe Dreamweaver CS4. According to the company, Adobe eLearning Suite is aimed at users involved in the learning process, who need to put together experiences designed to be served through multiple channels including the Cloud, the desktop and mobile devices.
“The new Adobe eLearning Suite is a unique and highly integrated set of tools designed to help professionals author, enrich, review and publish rich eLearning content all within one environment,” Naresh Gupta, senior vice president of the Print and Publishing Business Unit at Adobe, stated. “By leveraging different applications and streamlined workflows, learning professionals can be truly innovative and reach learners in new ways anytime, anywhere, and through any medium.”
Adobe eLearning Suite comes with a price tag of US$1799, and is already available for purchase through Adobe Authorized Resellers. The company is also offering Adobe Captivate 4 as a standalone product, for the price of US$799. The suite is set up to permit those involved in educational processes to take learning tasks to the next level by integrating video, audio, and visuals into their presentations. In this context, the solution delivers eLearning capabilities, courseware authoring, simulations, and media editing.
“Once content is ready for delivery, users can select one of several standardized output formats, including SWF, HTML, PDF, AVI, and SCORM, enabling easy delivery to the Web, desktop and learning management systems. If course designers don’t have access to a learning management system, the Adobe eLearning Suite allows users to publish directly to Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro (sold separately). Additionally, Adobe Device Central CS4 allows course designers to design, preview, and test content for viewing on more than 600 mobile device screens,” Adobe added.

Intel Developer: Windows 7 Beta Very Stable, Compared with Previous Windows Betas
“While I do believe that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are very stable operating systems (...) in evaluating the stability of the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems, I compared them to previous beta operating systems and not to systems that had achieved the RTM (release to manufacturing) milestone,” Holland brought clarification to reports having him declaring the Beta of Win 7 as “incredibly stable.”
As far as Microsoft is concerned, Windows 7 is now past its four core development milestones, M1, M2, M3 and Beta, announced by the end of 2008 (even if public downloads of Build 7000 were made available only on January 10). The software giant has already confirmed that Windows 7 Beta is feature-complete, and that only a few features tucked away in the operating system will be unveiled at a later date.
“I merely [qualified] the level of stability against previous beta operating systems. If you understand the operating system and device drivers have achieved the beta milestone and have not been released to manufacturing, then I would encourage you to download either the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 betas and check them out. If our IT department allowed, I really would use them on my corporate laptop, but until then I'll just use them on less critical machines,” Holland added.
Still, Holland emphasized that Windows 7 Beta continued to be nothing more than a pre-release version of the next iteration of Windows. At the same time, chances are good that applications and drivers tailored to Win 7 will also be in Beta stage. Still, the Beta label is an indication of inherent problems, and, in this context, exceptions to the stability offered by Windows 7 are bound to appear , especially in real-world, users-specific scenarios.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Beta v.113
The second service pack for Windows Vista will be made available well after a year since the delivery of Service Pack 1. New leaked information on the Vista SP2 release schedule indicates that Microsoft has changed its initial plans for the release, pushing the RTM date within the second quarter of 2009. In all fairness, the Redmond company has, so far, neither announced any official deadline for the delivery of Vista SP2, nor confirmed in any manner the release schedule dates reportedly leaked in the wild. The only confirmation provided by the software giant involves the availability of Vista SP2 by mid-2009.
Although the Vista SP2 was previously reported to be released to manufacturing in April 2009, it seems that this won't be the case. According to information provided by TechARP, Microsoft has pushed the RTM in the second quarter of 2009, at a date which remains to be announced. Q2 2009 will also see the release of the Wave 0 of Vista SP2 Builds, only six weeks after RTM. The availability of Vista SP2 will continue with Wave 1 releases, namely the rest of the localized versions that have not been included into Wave 0.
At the same time, Microsoft no longer plans to offer Vista SP2 Release Candidate in February 2009. Instead, testers will be getting an RC Escrow build of the service pack. In Escrow, the RC code will be complete, but the company will allow testers to identify show-stopping bugs before the public Release Candidate is offered. Only in March 2009 does Microsoft intend to deliver the fully-fledged Vista Service Pack 2 Release Candidate.
Microsoft announced RTM SP1 for Windows Vista in February 2008 and started serving the bits to the general public in March of last year. At the start of December 2008, the company launched the first Beta for Windows Vista SP2 and for Windows Server 2008 SP2. In this regard, the development of the second SP for Vista will continue in parallel with that of SP2 for Windows Server 2008.
